Junior Teaching Assistant Program

The JTA Program is a Peer Mentoring Program that allows students the opportunity to mentor incoming freshmen through the Freshman Seminar Program. Students must apply to be a JTA and will enroll in a hybrid course ID 4090 (3 credits). Students will enroll in ID 4090 separately, but will NOT enroll in the Freshman Seminar in which they are a JTA. ID 4090 will examine the complementary processes of teaching and learning from both the theoretical and pragmatic perspectives. Students will learn to engage, listen and assist first-year students in a mature and professional manner relating to their adjustment to UCCS and academic success. Students will also work with faculty sponsors to contribute to the instruction of their designated Freshman Seminar class.

Requirements

  1. Attendance at each of your Freshman Seminar classes is mandatory.  THIS IS THE “LEARNING LAB” PORTION OF THE COURSE.
  2. Act as a model student, upholding the standards of ethics and integrity that UCCS expects of its students.
  3. Show up to class ready to be enthusiastic, helpful and focused.
  4. Complete the required reading for the Freshman Seminar and ID 4090 class and encourage your Freshman Seminar students to do their work, as well.  They may wonder if they have to do other projects, presentations, etc.
  5. Go out of your way to keep in contact with students about assignments, events, etc., especially those students who appear to be struggling.
  6. Plan activities outside of class (e.g., study sessions, bowling, campus/sporting events).
  7. Respond to instructor and student e-mails immediately.
  8. Build rapport. Make sure you greet and talk to each student in your section each week, and stay in touch outside of class, too.
  9. Maintain constant communication with your Freshman Seminar instructor and ID 4090 instructor if you have an issue or complication with one of your Freshman Seminar students. We are here to help and guide you, so please ask us for assistance!
  10. Lead by example.
