Fundamentals of Coaching Track & Field

This course offers an innovative curriculum designed to equip PE teachers and youth/middle school coaches with the tools to take their track and field programs to the next level. An experienced team of coaches will provide cutting edge instruction and age-appropriate drills in all the track and field disciplines. The day will consist of three general sessions and two hands-on training sessions in the events of your choice.

Attendees will learn:
  • Streamlined practice planning and results oriented program development
  • Up- to- date athletic training tools to optimize athletic performance in the following events:
    • Running Events (Hurdles, Sprints, Distance and Relays)
    • Jumps (High jump, Long Jump and Triple Jump)
    • Throws (Shot Put and Discus)
  • A unique approach to warm-up, strength training, and dynamic movement.
  • Development of athletes with strong character as you role model true servant leadership.

Presenters

Mike Caton

  • Cross Country/Track & Field Head Coach, Colorado Springs Christian School

Mike Caton has been working in the fitness industry for over 30 years. As the former Director of the Cooper Aerobic Center in Dallas, Texas to his current coaching position at CSCS he has left his mark as an expert in the industry. He has coached multiple athletes to state championships in the hurdles and long jump. In addition, he has been a featured author for several magazines including: Outside, Men's Fitness, GQ, Vitality and has written articles for the American College of Sports Medicine.

Michele Davis

Michele Davis has been coaching teams and individual athletes in Cross Country and Track & Field for over 30 years in Australia, New Zealand, and the USA. In recent years she has worked with the Landsharks Running Club and Junior Olympic programs as well as local middle and high school athletes. Michele also worked as a PE teacher for many years. In Australia, Michele served as the head coach of a large running club, while serving as the head coach for numerous State Representative teams competing at Australian National Championships. As the Australian Athletics Development Officer for the Australian Capital Territory, Coach Davis developed and expanded programs for ages five years old through adults. She has coached several individual athletes and teams to national championships or national medal placements in both the USA and Australia.

Matt Krich

Coach Matt has been involved in Track & Field as an athlete since 1979 and as a coach since 1986. He was ranked nationally in all three throwing events and as a decathlete. He still competes today at the Master's level. Matt has coached athletes of all levels including seven Olympic trial athletes, two of which qualified for the Olympics. Coach Krich takes great pride in coaching young athletes who have little or no track experience and developing them into state and national qualifiers. His primary focus is teaching/training proper technique with an emphasis on having fun. Matt strongly believes in developing the complete athlete with a strategic mind and excellence at a highly competitive level.

Steve Rex

Steve Rex has been coaching sports for 27 years from the developmental to collegiate level. In 2000, Steve co-founded the Landsharks Running Club, a program for K-6th graders in the Colorado Springs area. This program touches the lives of over 3,500 athletes annually, with a focus on developing young runners in a positive environment. At The Classical Academy Junior High and High School, Steve is best known for preparing large teams that have fed 26 High School Team Championships in Track & Field/Cross Country for the last 12 years. He runs high quality events, develops highly effective individual training plans for athletes, and stresses an emphasis on sportsmanship. As the director of the Landsharks' Junior Olympic programs, he inspires athletes to expand their dreams and goals onto the State, Regional and National levels. Coach Rex's leadership and coaching skills were developed from his 15 year career as an Army Airborne Ranger preparing soldiers for operations throughout the world.
