The Knapsack Institute: Transforming Teaching and LearningAs our nation becomes increasingly diverse, it is imperative to have the understanding and resources to effectively navigate discussions about diversity and inequality in the classroom and workplace. Race, class, gender and sexuality are highly personal and emotionally-laden subjects. They may evoke a range of responses, from hostility and anger to guilt and depression. The Institute will prepare you to preempt and manage such responses and be better prepared. The name, "The Knapsack Institute" hails from Peggy McIntosh's renowned article, "White privilege and male privilege: A personal account of coming to see correspondences through work in women's studies." Goals/ObjectivesParticipants will gain the tools, knowledge and support to create an inclusive and empowering educational setting and experience.
- Attendance and participation at the Knapsack Institute. Participants must register for the conference at: www.uccs.edu/knapsack/index.html.
- Reflection Paper: Attendees must submit a reflection paper (approx. 1-2 pages). This paper should examine your own personal development and lessons learned in this institute experience. Has your own understanding of the issues facing youth changed? Has your understanding of your own life experiences changed in any ways? What has been most personally meaningful and transformative in your training? What did you learn about yourself?

She writes a blog for the Huffington Post, and has authored numerous books, including White Man Falling: Race, Gender and White Supremacy and most recently co-edited Sex, Gender, and Sexuality: The New Basics.
She directs The Matrix Center for the Advancement of Social Equity and Inclusion (www.uccs.edu/matrix), works with the national White Privilege Conference and co-founded and co-facilitates the Knapsack Institute a national curriculum transformation project.
