CHIPS is a truly interactive problem solving aid for general chemistry students. It is not simply a "tell me your answer and I'll tell you if you're right or not" program, but one in which an animated character, Dr. Chip, actually guides students step by step through the process of setting up and solving general chemistry problems, just as we do in the classroom. In addition to information within each problem that can be dragged into the solution, students also have access to drop-down menus of constants, conversion factors, molar masses, and equations. They are allowed to make choices, and make mistakes, with immediate feedback from Dr. Chip at each step of the solution. This current version of CHIPS contains problems from most of the topic areas in a typical first semester general chemistry course, including writing and balancing chemical equations, stoichiometry, thermochemistry, atomic and molecular structure, and gas laws.
