Frequently Asked Questions - Spring Commencement

 

How do I make sure I have completed all the requirements for graduation and I am on the list to graduate?

For bachelor's degree candidates: Call the Student Success Center at 719-255-3260 to set up an appointment for a Senior Audit.  Graduate students should contact staff in the respective programs.

For master's and PhD graduate candidates: Contact your department staff or faculty representative.

 

How do I purchase my cap and gown?

Visit the UCCS Bookstore at the Graduate Fair:  April 7, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and April 8, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the University Center - Room 116, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. After and before the Graduate Fair you may purchase your caps and gowns at the Bookstore.Professional photographer will be available for Cap and Gown photo packages at the Graduate Fair.

 

How do I order announcements?

  • Visit the C.B. Announcements table at the Graduate Fair: April 7, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 pm. and April 8, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the University Center - Room 116, or order directly by calling 1-800-433-0296.  For more information, contact customer service at the Bookstore at 255-3247 or order online at www.cbgrad.com.

If I am graduating with honors, will I receive an honor cord?

Yes, honor cords are ordered for graduates graduating with honorary distinction Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, or Cum Laude, based on Fall 2013 GPAs. All individuals receiving Latin honors will receive an honor cord when they check in on the day of Commencement.

 

What do the different color honor cords represent?

For bachelor's degree candidates: Latin Honors: Summa Cum Laude (old gold), Magna Cum Laude (silver), and Cum Laude (bronze).  Other colors represent involvement in honor societies.

 

Are graduate students eligible to receive Latin honors?

No, there are no Latin honors for Master's Degree students, only for undergraduates.

 

What time does Commencement start?

Undergraduate and Graduate Commencement Cermony for the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences at the World Arena at 11:30 a.m. Graduates should arrive no later than 11:00 a.m.  World Arena doors open at 10:00 a.m.

Undergraduate and Graduate Commencement Ceremony for Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences, College of Business, School of Public Affairs, College of Education, College of Engineering and Applied Science at the World Arena at 3:30 p.m. Graduates should arrive no later than 3:00 p.m.  World  Arena doors open at 2:00 p.m.

 

How long will Commencement take?

Approximately 2 hours for each ceremony.

 

Do I need to pay for parking at the World Arena?

No

 

Am I allowed to bring outside items into the World Arena?

We discourage attendees from bringing large bags/backpacks into the World Arena.  They are not prohibited, but certainly discouraged due to the safety concern. Do guests need tickets to attend Commencement?

No.

 

Are graduates limited to a certain number of guests?

No, but there is a limit to the number of seats that can be "saved," if you have plans of sending one person early.  The World Arena only allows four seats to be saved by any one person.

 

Can you recommend hotels/motels near the World Arena for out-of-town guests?

The University is unable to endorse individual hotels/motels; however, the Colorado Springs Visitors Guide Website offers a listing of hotels in Colorado Springs.

 

When/where can I pick up my cap and gown?

Caps and gowns can be purchased on-site at the Bookstor or at the Graduation Fair.

 

What do I do if I forget to purchase my cap/gown?

There will be a few cap and gowns available for purchase at the World Arena on the day of Commencement. Visit the Bookstore table between
Gates A and B

 

Which side of my cap does the tassel go on?

For Undergraduates: Tassels should start on the right side of the mortarboard.  At the end of the ceremony graduates will be asked to move it to the left.

For Masters and Ph.D.s: Tassels begin and remain on the left side of the mortarboard.

 

Can I decorate my cap and gown?

You are asked not to alter your regalia in any way.

 

What should I do with my cap and gown after the ceremony?

Since the regala are purchased, they are yours to keep. 

 

Where do (specific) graduates sit?

In the order listed in the program; see map on inside cover. Graduates will cross the stage in a double line fashion.

 

Will there be an opportunity to get photos with faculty and/or the dean of my college?

Faculty are encouraged to mingle with students following the ceremony on the arena floor.

 

Will there be an opportunity to get professional photos?

Yes, Grad Images will be available to take photos on the day of Commencement and during the ceremony.   If you need to get a hold of them directly, the Grad Images customer service number is 1-800-261-8576 ext. 1950. You can also go to their website to log on to see your photos at:  http://www.gradimages.com/   (enter "UCCS" for school).

 

When will I get my diploma?

Your diploma will be mailed to you by the end of August.
