Frequently Asked Questions -  Fall Commencement

 

How do I make sure I have completed all the requirements for graduation and I am on the list to graduate?
For bachelor's degree candidates: call the Student Success Center at 255-3260 to set up an appointment for a Senior Audit.
For master's and PhD graduate candidates: Contact your department staff or faculty representative.

 

How do I purchase my cap and gown?
Visit the Bookstore at the Graduate Fair: November 7th and 8th outside the Bookstore in the University Center, 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. on November 7th and 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on November 8th.   After and before the Graduate Fair you may purchase your cap and gown at the UCCS Bookstore.

 

How do I order announcements?
Visit the C.B. Announcements table at the Graduate Fair: November 7th and 8th outside the Bookstore in the University Center, 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. on November 7th and 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on November 8th, or order directly by calling 1-800-433-0296.  For more information, contact customer service at the Bookstore at 255-3247 or order online at www.cbgrad.com.

 

What do the different color honor cords represent?
For bachelor's degree candidates:  Latin Honors: Summa Cum Laude (old gold), Magna Cum Laude (silver), and Cum Laude (bronze).  Other colors represent involvement in honor societies.
Latin honors for Master's and PhD graduate candidates are not awarded.

 

What time does Commencement start?
Commencement for undergraduate and graduate students starts at 2:00 pm at the World Arena.  Graduates are asked to be at the World Arena by 1:15 pm.

 

How long will Commencement take?
Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours for the undergraduate & graduate ceremony.

 

Do I need to pay for parking at the World Arena?
No.  Parking is free in the lots surrounding the World Arena.  Event staff will direct you to the appropriate parking locations.

 

Am I allowed to bring outside items into the World Arena?
It depends on the item.  We are required to follow the guidelines set forth by the World Arena.

 

Do guests need tickets to attend Commencement?
No.

 

Are graduates limited to a certain number of guests?
No, but there is a limit to the number of seats that can be "saved," if you have plans of sending one person early. The World Arena only allows four seats to be saved by any one person.   

 

Can you recommend hotels/motels near the Pikes Peak Center for out-of-town guests?
The University is unable to endorse individual hotels/motels; however, the Colorado Springs Vistors Guide website offers a listing of hotels in Colorado Springs.

 

Are there handicap seating areas for individuals with wheelchairs, crutches, or walkers?
Yes.

When/where can I pick up my cap and gown?
Caps and gowns can be picked up the week of December 10th in UCCS Bookstore. If you are not able to pick up that week (Monday-Thursday), you may pick up your cap and gown the day of the ceremony at the UCCS Bookstore table.please go to the Bookstore. 

 

What do I do if I forget to pick up my cap/gown?
Remaining cap and gowns can be picked up at the World Arena inside the main entrance at the Bookstore area (between Gates B and C).

 

I am unable to pick up my cap and gown during the designated time.  Can I send someone to pick it up for me?
Yes, but the person picking up the cap and gown must have the graduate's cap and gown receipt.

 

Which side of my cap does the tassel go on?
For Undergraduates Tassels should start on the right side of the mortarboard.  At the end of the ceremony graduates will be asked to move it to the left.

For Masters and Ph.D.s: Tassels begin and remain on the left side of the mortarboard.

 

Can I decorate my cap and gown?
You are asked not to alter your regalia in any way.

 

Where do I drop off my cap and gown?
Since Cap and Gowns are purchased, you may either keep your cap and gown, or drop them off at a recycling point between Gates B and C.

 

Where do (specific) graduates sit?
In the order listed in the program
Graduates will cross the stage in a single line fashion.

 

Will there be an opportunity to get photos with faculty and/or the dean of my college?
Faculty are also encouraged to mingle with students following the ceremony.

 

Will there be an opportunity to get professional photos with family and friends?
Yes, Grad Images will be available to take photos on the day of Commencement.  They will be set-up immediately following the ceremony on the right-hand side of the stage, on the arena floor.

 

When will I get my diploma?
Your diploma will be mailed to you by the end of March.
