Dr. Michael Hackman is a Professor in the Department of Communication. Dr. Hackman's research focuses on a wide range of communication issues, including: the impact of gender and culture on leadership behavior, leadership succession, organizational trust, and intercultural communication. His research has appeared in journals such as CommunicationEducation, Communication Quarterly, Distance Education, Leadership, The Leadership Review, the Journal of Leadership Studies, and the Southern Speech CommunicationJournal. He is also the co-author of three books, Leadership: A CommunicationPerspective (6th edition, 2013), Building the High-Trust Organization: Strategies for Supporting Five Key Dimensions of Trust (2010) and Creative Communication: Principles andApplications (1995).
From 1991 to 2002 Dr. Hackman served as a Visiting Professor at the University of Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand on four separate occasions. There he taught in the International MBA Program and developed courses in leadership, creativity, management communication, and advanced public speaking. He has also served as an adjunct professor at the University of Siena (Italy), the University of Vienna (Austria), the SP Jain Center of Management, Dubai (United Arab Emirates) and the China Executive Leadership Academy Pudong, Shanghai (China). Dr. Hackman is currently an adjunct faculty member at the Center for Creative Leadership. Dr. Hackman has provided consultation to public and private sector organizations in Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates and throughout the United States. His clients have included AARP, Agilent Technologies, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Ernst & Young, Georgia-Pacific, Harley Davidson, Hewlett-Packard, Fiat, Kellogg's, Kimberly-Clark, Mars Inc., Medtronic, NASA, Philips, Telecom New Zealand, USA Cycling, the United States Air Force, and Wells Fargo.
In 1995, Dr. Hackman was the recipient of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs Outstanding Teacher Award.
Away from work, Dr. Hackman is an avid sports fan who enjoys watching and participating in a wide variety of sports, particularly golf. He also enjoys travel and meeting new people. Most of all, Dr. Hackman enjoys spending time with his family.
