After graduating in 2004, Pat worked as a high school mathematics teacher in the Pittsburgh area and research consultant for the Human Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University for 3 years and the Worcester Polytechnic Institute Department of Computer Science for 3 years.  In 2007, he enrolled at the University of Virginia and completed his PhD in instructional technology with a focus in mathematics education.

Pat’s primary research interests include curriculum and instruction in early childhood and secondary mathematics education, instructional technology in mathematics learning environments, and intelligent tutoring systems.
