College of Education's Intensive English Program Growing

January 1, 2012

Over the past year, the College of Education's Office of Global Programs has quietly been building their Intensive English Program (IEP) to serve the needs of English language learners on campus and in the local community.  Last spring the program began with three international students and one instructor, but has rapidly grown to an enrollment of 38 students and seven instructors this semester.  With students from Korea, China, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Peru, the Ivory Coast, France, Columbia, and Venezuela, the program is incredibly diverse which ensures that students are using their English skills with their classmates both inside and out of the classroom.  The IEP is designed to provide service to students of the following profiles:

  • Generally, 1.5 students are non-native speakers of English, frequently children of immigrants, who regularly use another language in the home environment, as their native language, while using English outside the home. These students struggle with their command of English in specific skill areas such as listening, speaking, reading or writing. These students frequently transfer to UCCS from community colleges.
  • Non-native speakers of English and certain international students who are studying a degree program at UCCS. These students struggle with command of English and need assistance in their proficiency.
  • International students that would like to study a degree program at UCCS but do not meet the English language requirement for admissions.
  • Non-native speakers of English in the local community that would like to study English in a university setting.

The program currently has classes ranging from low intermediate through low advanced but hopes to expand these offerings as enrollment continues to grow.
