Online CURR MA and Alternative Licensure
The College of Education is pleased to introduce the new online Alternative Licensure Program.
About
The ALP is a one-year intensive program that leads to recommendation for Colorado provisional licensure. The program has its own complete admission process beyond the admission requirements of the University.
The Alternative Licensure Program seeks self-motivated, committed, resourceful individuals who can readily assume teaching roles in a public school classroom. Examples are para-professionals, substitute teachers, career change individuals, retired military or those who have the background and potential for successfully completing this rigorous, fast-paced program.
We provide licensure training in the following Secondary (7 - 12) Endorsement Areas:
- English
- Math
- Science
- Social Studies
- Spanish (K-12)
The program is intended for graduate students who have had significant classroom experience working with adolescents in middle and/or high school settings. With an additional 6 credits (LEAD 5700 and CURR 5090) the program leads to a master’s degree. The ALP program at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs is a designated agency authorized by the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) to offer secondary licenses in English, mathematics, science, social studies, and K-12 Spanish.
Alternative Licensure + MA in C&I
A student who completes the ALP may take an additional six credit hours in order to attain a Master of Arts in Curriculum & Instruction.
These additional courses must be completed within three semesters of completing the licensure program.
Advising Sessions
- Listen and watch the appropriate advising session(s) for your program.
- Complete the respective Advising Session quiz. Select undergraduate quiz or graduate quiz, as appropriate for your program.

Admissions
The following table outlines the requirements for an ALP candidate:

| Degrees | Must have successfully completed a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution of higher education. |
| Student Teaching | Did not complete an approved educator preparation program with student teaching. |
| Credits in Endorsement Areas | Must have an above-listed major or 30+ semester hours in the desired endorsement area—these courses must correspond to areas specified in the Colorado State Standards. |
| Exams | Must have passed the State Board of Education-approved content exam for the endorsement being sought. |
| Other | Must have passed a criminal background check, including submission of fingerprints. |

The requirements for these courses is that you have a full time teaching position with supervision and support by a University Supervisor, a mentor teacher, and the school principal. The Resident Teaching courses in fall and spring include an on-line seminar.

Applying for Provisional License
Once the resident teacher has successfully completed the program, the Recommendation for Licensure is completed and within 8 to 10 weeks CDE issues a provisional license to the resident teacher.
Program Requirements
It is your responsibility to make sure that you complete program requirements and licensure procedures appropriately. (It is required that all participants in the ALP maintain a 3.0 GPA and receive no grade lower than a B- in any class. Because the program requires immediate participation on the job in a school, there are no opportunities for incompletes in the methods or resident teaching classes.)
