About Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language Certificate Program

The Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language (TESL/TEFL) Certificate Program consists of four core courses that will give you the foundation and knowledge necessary to work with ELLs. These four courses can be applied toward the 24 credit hour Culturally Linguistically Diverse Education Endorsement (CLDE) endorsement and MA Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MA TESOL) program.

The TESL/TEFL Certificate Program is 12 credits and consists of these four courses: CURR 5713 , CURR 5701, CURR 5703, & CURR 5705 .

TESL/TEFL Admissions Checklist

Complete the electronic online application for the Graduate School:

Obtain three letters of reference

Submit one transcript from all institutions of higher education previously attended

Prepare a career goal statement (see department specific requirements)

Current résumé

Complete a background check or provide an unofficial copy of teaching licensure

Once application materials are in, you will need to interview with a faculty advisor for the program.

*Additional items of note for International applicants:

      • All transcripts must be evaluated and translated into English through an authorized Credential Service (for example: World Education Services, Wes)
      • English Proficiency must demonstrated through providing evidence of an IELTS score of 6.0 or above, a TOEFL score of 550‐(paper‐based) or 80‐(internet‐based) or an ACT/COMPASS® English score of 270 or above (the ACT/COMPASS® may be taken through the UCCS Office of International Affairs). Please contact the UCCS Office of International Affairs at: or call: 1‐719-255‐7218 to make arrangements to take the ACT/COMPASS® at UCCS.

General Background Check for Admission

All College of Education applicants must complete a general background check as part of the admissions requirements:

3) Pay $6.85

4) Print a copy of the background check and return it to the College of Education Student Resource Office as part of admissions materials (current CO School or agency employees who have already completed a background check for employment may provide a copy of their CO license or background check results).

*CURR 5703 -3 Assessment: Methods, Materials and Theories for ELL's
*CURR 5705 -3 Second Language Acquisition: Capstone
*CURR 5713 -3 Language and Linguistics

*TESL/TEFL courses (12 credit hours) required for the online certificate. All credits may be applied to the CLDE Endorsement or the MA TESOL within 5 years of taking the first course.
