About MA TESOL

The MA Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MA TESOL) program is designed especially for monolingual English speaking teachers, paraprofessionals and pre-service teachers who have English Language Learners (ELLs) in their classrooms, and want to know how to better serve those students. Educators working with individual, small groups or whole classes of ELLs will benefit from this program. Teachers who have a teaching license from the Colorado Department of Education may use this opportunity to seek a Master of Arts Degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages(TESOL).

The MA TESOL degree is 30 semester hours or 10 courses. The first eight courses (24 semester hours) are applicable to the Culturally Linguistically Diverse Endorsement (CLDE) through the Colorado Department of Education. The last two courses are the core/research classes that complete the MA in TESOL.    The Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language Certificate (TESL/TEFL) is a 12 credit hour  program.  Students would take only CURR 5701, 5703, 5705 and 5713.

Interview with department faculty member

Once application materials are in, you will need to interview with a faculty advisor for the program.

*Additional items of note for International applicants:

      • All transcripts must be evaluated and translated into English through an authorized Credential Service (for example: World Education Services, Wes)
      • English Proficiency must demonstrated through providing evidence of an IELTS score of 6.0 or above, a TOEFL score of 550‐(paper‐based) or 80‐(internet‐based) or an ACT/COMPASS® English score of 270 or above (the ACT/COMPASS® may be taken through the UCCS Office of International Affairs). Please contact the UCCS Office of International Affairs at: international@uccs.edu or call: 1‐719-255‐7218 to make arrangements to take the ACT/COMPASS® at UCCS.
