Continuing a five-year relationship with the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies, CHS Director Kurt Johnson and CHS Instructor Brett Lovegrove (former Head of Counterterrorism for the City of London) taught and facilitated in the eighth iteration of the three-week Seminar in Trans-Atlantic Civil Security in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

CHS Offers Disaster Public Health Certificate Program
Beth-El College of Nursing & Health Sciences, in collaboration with the Center for Homeland Security at UCCS, is offering two, four-course, 12-credit-hour certificate programs in Disaster Public Health. These courses are offered for undergraduate and graduate credit and all material can be completed online!

REINING IN ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR OF FRESHMAN SEMINAR
The Center for Homeland Security completed its third successful year of Freshmen Seminar. The center with its team of instructors, Director Kurt Johnson, Pat Braker, and John San Agustin, along with Junior Teaching Assistants, Steve Peck, Jordan Brown, and Becca Menkhus helped foster and encourage a productive learning environment with "25". The seminar is designed to introduce freshman to the campus culture and success habits that will assist them in achieving their academic goals as well as the multiple disciplines involved in securing, responding to, and recovering from natural and man-made disasters and threats to our nation's security.

CHS Director Kurt Johnson authored chapter 20 entitled The Use of the Military in the Homeland. One of the most important and sensitive concerns of our time is how to properly use the military in the homeland, especially in a representative democracy such as the United States. We are engaged in an ongoing struggle to strike the right balance between maintaining national security and protecting civil liberties against a backdrop of suspicion fueled by perceived and actual abuses of the past, both in our country and in those from which our founders, early settlers, and later immigrants all emigrated.
The book is published by the American Bar Association (ABA) and Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.
