NCAA Athletics: Comments from 10/20/11

Members of campus were asked what they would create, keep, and discard regarding NCAA Athletics. The following are their responses:

Create

•Football

•Athletics included students from all over, but out LGBT students are not being supported well enough to increase success. This needs to change.

•Fencing

•Keep sports, don't add football

•Need to create a more engaging athletic program. Consider other sports to add.

•Need to work to get more faculty and community involved

•Free event nights/giveaways. If you can get them in, they will come back

•Create a hockey league. This would be the first one for CU.

•Tennis

•Support system connecting student success and athletic staff

•More facilities, more sports, more resources...so we can win.

•Keep/add sports

•We should create a position for strength and conditioning so we can utilize the opportunities and educational experience for all of the students in strength and conditioning at UCCS

•Student fee increase

•Hockey team

•Renovate and expand the existing Mountain Lion Stadium to include a track

•Add swim team and tennis team

•We need an athletic building for our teams

•Add baseball and add funding so we can pay our coaches more

•Please add lacrosse. Fastest growing sport! Adams and CMU just started.

•I would like to see a hockey team

•Make athletic events zero waste. Model the way.

•Create swimming

• Create-a UCCS community sports council to include people on campus who currently (and often independently) do business with the Colorado Springs sport industry. The council will allow UCCS folks to communicate w/one another about what they are doing w/ the community. This makes UCCS a more cohesive and collaborative group and enhances our reputation in the community as a cohesive sport entity. Left and right hands will know what the other is doing. Better appearance as UCCS.

•More soccer training grounds. Turf field inside a dome.

•Hockey: inline and ice

•Have a specific advisor that works in the athletic department as a go to person for students

•Obtain/build a track for track athletes

•Create a partnership w/ CSPR and youth athletics to use the sports fields more openly

•Arena, arena, arena

•Build athletic field house

•Growing is important to student overall positive impression of their alma mater. We don't need a football team, but other sports would be great!

•More athletic scholarships

•More emphasis on soccer and lacrosse

•More activities for 4-5 grade and junior high kids. Clinics, autographs.

•Larger field house

•Zero waste at all events, sports and culture

•Try to create more scholarship for athletes

•Bigger gym/weight room with better equipment

•Focus on developing soccer

•More fields. Collaborate w/ MLS?

•I like what sports can do to help create school spirit. Is there a way to get more staff and faculty interested in attending more games?

•Build an all-inclusive athletic facility

•Separate athletic facilities

•New athletic logo (keep classic lion head for nostalgic). Create new pro looking logo for future/present.

•Athletics-build a support from the community for our teams-like the CC hockey fan base

•Football team, then marching band. CSU-Pueblo has both

•New sounds system in Gallgoly

•Install a football program. CSU-Pueblo has had success and national coverage in the last year. Need a state of the art facility for recruiting.

•Football, racquetball

•NCAA football!

•Create a football program with the intent to create better pride in the UCCS athletic program

•We need a football team!

•Football program!

•Division II Football

•Football!!!

•Foot-ball team!!!

•Football or wrestling. More sporting facilities. Field house, stadium, student ticket sales

•We need a football team and corresponding stadium. We would be the only one in the Springs. This would help with school pride and so many other factors!

•We should create a football team

•Football! It's not my thing, but it would be great for campus life and school spirit!

•Girls golf team. Football.

•Create a football team. This would really help give the students on campus a much needed identity to rally behind.

•We need a football team. Offer more full scholarships

•You should get a football team.

•Work on more scholarship and recruiting for all sports.

•Overall, you're doing great!

•Football Team or Baseball Team

•Football

Keep

•Athletics

•Keep-sending out schedules to faculty and staff

•Rivalries and student engagement/athletic events

•Keep it all and build more programs

•Keep advertising sports and athletics to encourage increased attendance

•Do facility and staff get in for Free to home games?

•Keep current sports teams

•The event center is great for sport teams. Love the music band at games too.

•Continue to help student athletes balance dedication to the sport, school and the social/community experience of college.

•Keep- the school spirit by the events you hold

•Boo-zar

•Keep student athletes involved in the campus

Discard

•Stop letting the HS use the soccer field. Remove the football lines

•Drop funding for athletics, esp teams that do not generate revenue

•Notions that we cannot be more involved in NCAA Athletics b/c were not Boulder. Their teams suck! Go Mountain Lions!

•Discard- the sometimes proprietary attitude about space on campus. Recognize that space is at a premium and needs to be shared with other student programs

•No more sports. It's a terrible waste of resources.
