Finance and Administration: Comments from 10/20/11

Members of campus were asked what they would create, keep, and discard regarding Finance and Administration. The following are their responses:

Create

•Pay non-tenured Faculty salaries that someone can live on. They are carrying our Enrollment/ Tuition Load

•We need to strategically grow our staff along with our student body.

•Greater transparency regarding how tuition generated by each college is returned to the colleges.

•Better counseling office. It is too small and cannot support the numbers of students needing support.

•Increase transparency of funds returning to colleges.

•Allow colleges to keep summer and extended studies revenues.

•Meet colleges and departments on a regular basis to get a better picture of how decisions affect these departments.

•Get existing programs in ALL areas funded at appropriate levels while we are adding new things-Delicate balance.

•Columbine is in SORE need of help in nearly every area you could look at.

•Continue to invest (invest more!) in C3 and other revenue generating ideas.

•We have many students with past due balances. We need to create a plan to early identify these students so we can try to seek out additional financing and maybe we can reduce our accounts receivable.

•A place for muslims to pray w/o interference.

•Return all summer tuition generated to the college that generated it.

•A streamlined approach to changes in Expense Reports and other online billing procedures.

•More support for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender population on campus.

•Scholarships and Support for students cut-off due to orientation issues w/ parents.

•Instead of having each little unit have to figure out how to deal with credit cards & online payments, create a central office that departments can work with. We are wasting a lot of staff time and putting UCCS at risk by "parting out" this activity - uneven knowledge and practice are dangerous!

•WUE should be "World" not "Western."

•Books need to be able to be charged at bookstore.

•Add more people to clean. Columbine Hall is a mess. Take the same care of Columbine as the other buildings inside and out.

•Simplify the payment and reimbursement process to emphasize efficiency and security of customer information; ie. Increased digitization of the process.

•We need to have more office space.

•More scholarship opportunities like Reach your Peek and Daniels Scholars.

•Online payment options for community events.

•Secure online payment and registration that can be tracked and controlled.

•Don't be afraid to raise fees a little so that a great learning community can be created.

•Reimbursed money for travel or transportation costs that have been incurred by university employees. It should be a much quicker process. Why does it take so long? Is direct deposit not faster/better than printed/mailed checks?

•Equitable budget allocation process...one that looks at the needs of each unit as a part of the larger campus.

•More Staff Please.

•Run all aspects as taught by the university not negate on things that make others happy both large and small.

•Outreach to newly developed departments - like an orientation - about what trainings are necessary, what permissions are needed, how to understand the Budget Process, etc. Rather than those new Dept. heads having to search for all of the information, give it to them.

•Have student staff admit when they do not have an answer and expect them to get correct answers for students.

•Veterans should receive discounted parking as GI Bill doesn't cover HUB passes.

•Training for HR & Finance liaisons...we need comprehensive training so we can follow campus and system policies.

•A climate where classified employees are not second class citizens & get raises just like all other employees. A revolt is brewing if something is not forthcoming.

•It does not seem that pay levels are comparable in equivalent jobs. The pay seems dependent on the willingness of the department head to advocate for their employees.

•More Chancellor outreach to students. I really loved the forums when they were occasionally held throughout the semester. I loved hearing updates on students.

•Complementary HUB-Pass parking for students living on campus.

•More workshops on how the budget process works.

Keep

•Burnett is doing an outstanding job.

•Continue departmental work study program to ensure that departments with lower budgets get some support.

•Continue to plan for weak economic times which have been our key to surviving! This advanced planning has saved us!

•Thank you for your transparency & openness to faculty concerns & feedback. Keep it up!

•Keep the bookstore & print shop operational & support the usage of them.

•Staff is very helpful when we ask questions.

•Suzanne & Ella

•Career Services

•Consolidating reports to one system. Don't implement additional reporting systems.

•Taking state/national economy into consideration when planning the campus budget; continue to preserve what staff we have!

•Student/Staff support with Financial Aid.

•Keep making the hard decisions financially to position UCCS for the future.

•I deeply appreciate the work of Burnett, G. Scott, and their staff. They have done an incredible job keeping UCCS from financial crisis.

•Investment.

•Keep up the good work! Admin & Fnce. Rocks J

•Great staff in budget and accounting - always responsive and helpful!

•Keep the shuttle program...the circular route...love it even if rider numbers are low.

•Continue offering excellent scholarships that support only out of state students. That really helps me as an out of state student.

Discard

•Is there any way to get rid of the C1/C2 = Tuition designations? Figuring out where to use money appears to stifle creativity in terms of student programming and planning for on-line course infrastructure.

•Streamline the process for hiring, as it is convoluted now & seems to change every time we are ready to hire. It seems redundant to use "My Leave" and enter time for people. Wasn't this supposed to eliminate the need to enter time by a staff person?

•Athletics

•Drop out of state tuition WUE World University Exchange.

•Stop pricing faculty - sponsored events, or, price them more reasonably! This is for auxiliary services.

•Current payment system for community events. The current payment system process seems to be more of a security hazard than using technology more efficiently. Get rid of taking CC payments by handwritten notes. Create online registration capabilities.

•I love that Sodexho has such an open communication policy and seeks feedback. Yet the overall equality is poor. Please don't just go for the cheapest option when/if the contract gets renewed.

•ISIS is difficult work.

•Making changes to the system every 6 months. Decide what is best and use it.
