Alumni and University Advancement: Comments from 10/20/11

Members of campus were asked what they would create, keep, and discard regarding Alumni and University Advancement. The following are their responses:

Create

•It would be great to have an alumni base that works specifically with athletic teams.

•Create dedicated communications department/manager position to support colleges

•Create an annual event that is scheduled around the same time every year. Having an event alums can point would help establish community of alums

•Allow individual departments some freedom to create their own logos or graphic identities to differentiate them on internal advertising/promotion.

•Highlight a staff/faculty member alumnus in the newsletters. Try to partner with local businesses to give us discounts when showing our alumni card. We get better deals and we are supporting the community

•More outreach to employees who are alums

•More opportunity for alumni to actively engage: recruit for UCCS fundraising and friend raising

•Create annual reunions for under and post graduates nationwide...like a fun summer weekend for alumni families

•Use of social media as a major component of how the University connects with students. I created a podcast TV show that teaches financial aid in an engaging way. Please contact me to discuss my thoughts :-)

•We need to find a way to have enough parking or other incentives for students to not park in the neighborhoods. It's dangerous and offensive to the community.

•We need another Anthony Cordova. He does such a good job and he has such an important position with so many students that we need to grow in this area.

•The first year experience (Barb Gaddis) area seems to need an Assistant Director or more resources. Our retention is so important and there is only 1 Barb.

•A solid department where colleges can go for marketing material development - use marketing students

•Create a PGA Golf Management alumni

•Bring more alumni to ongoing campus activities

•Listed shadowing opportunities that pair students with alumni who are still in the area...This would be especially great for students considering engineering and health professions

•A stronger mentoring community for alumni to mentor through the staff/faculty mentor program *would love all new UCCS students to have either a staff, faculty or alumni or peer mentor

•More family oriented events. I am a single working mom and can't attend unless I bring my daughter. I enjoy Back to the Bluffs, the Xmas at the zoo (bring it back...) etc...

•Seek out more internships in local and global community - alumni relations

•Organize a network to inform students of political issues

•Create more and better connections with alumni to make them feel a part of this family as well.

•Engage alumni on issues of sustainability. Request involvement and potentially financial support for pilot projects

•Departments really need a way to contact alums. This is a huge untapped resource for us - our grads love us but we lose contact. We could use help organizing alum reunions or conferences in our departments - please!

•Work to increase fundraising from alumni

•Market our university more to the state and regionally

•Help departments who work with community members through fundraising efforts

•Stronger alumni relations department through collaboration with student services.

•The Career Center

•We need to have department/college support to stay in continuous contact with all our alums. We need both money, templates and email lists and central infrastructure.

•Consider using Royall and CO to help increase our advancement efforts.

•Social events for alumni would be nice. Also, may encourage those that do not donate. I've not been invited to any social events.

•Continue to bring our alumni into our recruitment and teaching of our students

•Provide additional resources on marketing our campus

•More department related alumni events. Support alum associations by department.

•Naming convention for "University of Colorado Colorado Springs" it needs a hyphen or "at".

•More alumni events and better communications

•We should keep the "at"' in Univeristy of Colorado at Colorado Springs

•A program where UCCS alumni could sponsor a current UCCS individual or team sports athletics. For example, I am an olympic training athlete and could be sponsored by an alumni from UCCS.

•A way to network with our student organizations to promote our future alumni base.

•Jennifer Hane is doing a good job expanding this program but I.T. must be brought in to help departments track and communicate with alumni

•Better connections to departments - lists, emails...help inviting alumni to events.

•Engage alumni in campus and community sustainability

•More recognition for alums - Hall of Fames, Alums of the year, buildings named after them.

•Create a Hall of Fame and Recognize past athletes and students in a visible way. Be proud of past accomplishments.

•Mentorship opportunities with alumni and current students

•Expand community events that include past, present and future students through alumni, Booster and Partner clubs

•Web content and design belongs in marketing, not I.T.

•Advancement should do a better job communicating external initiatives and issues to campus community

•More obvious support for lesbian gay bisexual transgender population on campus. Include those who are alumni of UCCS.

•Create more connections to fundraising

•More outreach to campus departments. Provide training and support to departments through trainings and workshops. Focus on outreach, branding, cultivating alumni relationships with departments.

•Create a high school recruitment program where HS students intern in a university area. They then have a guaranteed job in college and are trained.

•Create/improve campus materials bank (photos, logos, etc.) current resources are pretty limited

•We need an @ or a dash or comma between the two Colorados! We look like dorks when we write it out as it currently is mandated.

•A full fledged communication office that has on-staff marketing and design professionals to produce high quality materials for most of the campus needs, instead of asking admin assistants all over campus to also have to do their own marketing and design and production. A small capable group of pros would be MUCH more efficient.

•Email for life retaining current address portal access may be more important though.

•I would like to see more media depicting minorities and targeting minority populations.

Keep

•Keep great alumni events across Colorado - keep it up. Also, the national regional events seem to be taking off

•Keep the alumni newsletter

•Email Communication

•Keep/expand campus events, especially those creating a community feel

•Joint alumni events with CU Denver and Boulder

•The photo collection is great! Keep it going.

•We currently collect some data on graduation success but we need to do more. Individual departments are beginning to collect the data but a more comprehensive undergrad and grad picture would be helpful.

•Continue to fund Excel centers on campus because they have greatly helped me and other students suceed in college.

•Excel Centers

•We need to grow our alumni base and improve our relations with the community. We are working on this and need to keep focusing on it for donations as well as develop a continuous family base so future families continue to go here instead of Boulder or other places.

•Keep the art gallery. We enjoy your shows.

•Keep up with current marketing and alumni trends (facebook, twitter, license plates, events to connect alumni with current UCCS community)

•Working with the campus to bring alumni back

•We need to more vigorously advise alums of the facilities and advantages UCCS offers them, as well as "occasions" for gathering. Emails are very impersonal, but I can't advise a better means of communication.

•Keep events that link our alumni with potential job opportunities

•Increased collaborative efforts for services asked for you, such as career services for alumni

•Keep electonic newsletter

•Resources and assistance for the University identity brand

•Excel centers

•Keep tapping into alumni resources..especially money!!

•The science center

•Continue to communicate with alumni through phone, email, and mail to remind them of UCCS

Discard

•Nothing

•Mountains in UCCS logo

•The phone calls asking for donations...the people calling were very pushy

•We need to quit printing the schedule since it is a waste of paper

•"University of Colorado Colorado Springs" unless this shows up on two lines

•The branding. As much as possible, UCCS needs to keep its own identity. Every school in the UC (UCLA, UCBerkley) system has its own identity. So should we.

•Don't just call asking for money. Call and ask how the person is doing and take a personal interest. Then you may get more response in the financial area.

•Alumni emails - look bad and are hard to read on many programs. Improve them or get rid of them.

•Parking - it keeps community away. Why do we anger visitors with tickets?
