General Information:

The Teacher Education Program at UCCS leads to initial licensure in either elementary teaching or secondary teaching in the fields of English, foreign language, mathematics, science, or social studies.

7-12 Education, or Secondary Education, is very different from elementary or special education, as it deals with younger adults with whom psychology and communication skills are essential. In addition, secondary education students must complete a major in an individual discipline aside from education (english, history, biology, physics, chemistry, spanish or math). The completion of this specialized major will define what subject the students will be teaching once in the professional field.

Career Possibilities:

The secondary education program is probably the UCCS diploma that opens the most specific doors after college: English teacher, History teacher, Biology teacher, Physics teacher, Chemistry teacher, Spanish teacher, and math teacher are the primary job opportunities with such a diploma. However, like the elementary and special education options, the following are also possible career choices:

  • School Counselor
  • Teacher Assistant
  • Education Administrator
  • School Librarian
  • Public Relations Specialists
  • Social Worker
  • School Coach
  • School Principal
  • School Nurse
