NURSING & GENERAL INFORMATION
Nursing is a discipline focused on assisting individuals, families and
communities in attaining, re-attaining and maintaining optimal health and functioning. Nurses
acknowledge that the nursing profession is an essential part of the society from which it has
grown. Nursing has developed an extensive body of knowledge and associated skills that
require extensive study to master. There are a number of educational paths to becoming a
professional nurse but all involve extensive study of nursing theory and practice and
training in clinical skills.
In almost all countries, nursing practice is defined and governed by law. Entrance to the
profession and nursing practice are regulated by national, state, or territorial boards of
nursing.
The UCCS Bachelor of Science in Nursing is a rigorous program that prepares
all students to practice professional nursing while providing care for individuals, families,
groups and communities.

Statistics:
About 3 out of 5 jobs are in hospitals.
Registered nurses constitute the largest health care occupation, with 2.4 million jobs.
Registered nurses are projected to create the second largest number of new jobs among all
occupations; job opportunities in most specialties and employment settings are expected to be
excellent, with some employers reporting difficulty in attracting and retaining enough RNs.
Median annual earnings of registered nurses were $52,330 in May 2004.
Generally, all four advanced practice specialties—clinical nurse specialists, nurse
practitioners, midwives, and anesthetists—will be in high demand, particularly in medically
underserved areas such as inner cities and rural areas.
