This high-impact training program will provide you with skills to make more educated lending decisions, think outside the box, and effectively analyze financial statements and ratios with more confidence.  Attendees will learn the accounting principles behind financial statements including inventory, leases, and more.  Whether you are new to the commercial lending industry, or need a refresher in financial reporting and analysis, this course is for you.

This intensive workshop is customized for the banking and lending industry, and is facilitated by exceptional faculty with expertise and experience in accounting, banking and finance. 


This two-day program is for both new and seasoned professionals in the banking and finance industry.  Recommended participants include:  commercial loan officers, commercial bankers, credit officers, credit analysts, credit granters, loan committee members, underwriters, branch managers, retail bankers, and key lending decision-makers.


Case studies and assignments will require participants to immediately apply what they have learned to their workplaces.

This program will include more hands-on, in-class assignments to apply skills learned. Participants will analyze financial statements and calculate ratios using real statements to gain a real-world understanding. An assignment will be given before the class begins.

  • How accounting rules and reporting influence financial statements

    • What is considered "useful information"?
    • Audited vs. reviewed vs. compilations of statements 
  • Selected financial reporting issues, including leases, inventory, depreciation, footnotes, loan covenants, long-term debt, and disposable income
  • Basics of financial statements
  • Introduction of case studies

Day 2  ::  How Financial Reporting Rules Affect Financial Statements
Friday, November 7  ::  8:30 am - 4:30 pm

  • Cash flows-statements, effects, and disposable income
  • Financial statement analysis "on steroids"
    • Financial ratios: what do they really mean?
  • Case study:  Which company would you lend to?


Facilitator: Kirk Wilcox, PhD  Dr. Wilcox is an Associate Professor of Accounting Emeritus at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS).  He served as an instructor for various continuing education programs for CPAs, both nationally and locally for 23 years and has taught 32 years in the University of Colorado Executive MBA program in Denver.  Dr. Wilcox also taught in the Graduate School of Banking at Colorado for over 16 years.  

His formal education includes a BSBA and an MBA from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin.  He practiced as a CPA for three years with Price Waterhouse & Company (now PriceWaterhouseCoopers) in Houston, Texas, and is a CPA (inactive) in Colorado.
