In the 350-page 2012 college rankings edition, “ America’s Best Colleges,” to be released Sept. 20, the magazine’s editors ranked the overall quality of UCCS tenth in a three-way tie among public master’s degree-granting Western universities. Plans call for converting nine commons areas in the existing Summit Village to two-person rooms as well as constructing two towers with approximately 100 students living in each and expanding dining facilities. The conversion of the commons areas will be completed by fall 2012, Reynolds said. Construction will begin on the towers and dining expansion in spring 2012 and should be completed for the fall 2013 semester. (More) UCCS offering online bachelor’s degree completion
Students can now complete degrees in business, criminal justice, nursing, and allied health without traveling to campus, according to Venkat Reddy, executive director of online program development. Throughout the spring and summer, UCCS faculty prepared junior and senior level courses to be available on line. More than 300 students are expected to enroll for the fall 2011 semester. “Colorado Springs is a globally connected community and today’s students must be prepared to navigate a complex world,” Provost Peg Bacon said. “Connecting UCCS students to the world requires particular ingenuity. For many UCCS students, the traditional semester-long study abroad program is not a viable option. We must open additional paths for global engagement.” (More) Rocket Science = Summer Fun
The NASA Propulsion Academy, based at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., is a 10-week, residential summer program of higher learning for college students interested in pursuing professional and leadership careers in space-related fields. Sarper, a junior at UCCS, prevailed through a rigorous selection process to be chosen for the program. (More)
Engineering welcomes new facultyTaylor Lilly, assistant professor, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in the College of Engineering and Applied Science, previously served as a lecturer within the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. With substantial research experience in propulsion concepts and gas-laser interaction, he is involved in UCCS collaborative projects with the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Air Force Academy. He earned bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. degrees in aerospace engineering from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.

Student enrollment at UCCS this fall is the highest in the university’s history with more than 9,300 students enrolled, university officials announced Sept. 12.
UCCS is among the best public regional universities in the Western United States, according to the editors of U.S. News and World Report.
The CU Regents approved by an 8-0 vote plans for additional student housing at UCCS as well as a new academic health services building on North Nevada Avenue.
Students can complete UCCS degrees in four high-demand fields by completing the final two years of coursework online beginning this fall.
UCCS will join a prestigious American Council on Education project funded by the Henry Luce Foundation to promote collaboration between internationalization and diversity education initiatives on college and university campuses.
Meral Sarper spent the summer learning and doing research. But she also got to travel, make friends, and hit things with a hammer, courtesy of the NASA Propulsion Academy program.
Scott Trimboli, assistant professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the College of Engineering and Applied Science, previously directed the Center for Space Studies in the National Institute of Science, Space and Security Centers. He earned his bachelor’s in engineering science from the U.S. Air Force Academy, a master’s in engineering mechanics from Columbia University, New York, and a Ph.D. in control engineering from Oxford University.
The Office of Alumni Relations extends its condolences to the family of Seyhan Dwelis ('92), who passed away in August 2011.
