Alumni Connections: College of Education, November 2010

Jennifer HaneYou'll notice a few changes in this month's issue of Alumni Connections - primarily the fact that we're now using a new email marketing tool to communicate with you. Our hope is that this new platform will allow us to better manage your communication preferences and create a reading experience that is more enjoyable for you. We'll continue fine-tuning the system in the months ahead, so please feel free to share any feedback on design or content via email. We value your opinion.

Best wishes for a safe and happy holiday season,

Jennifer Hane, BA '01, MPA '04
Director of University Events and Alumni Relations

COE Achievements

John WeathersCongratulations to John Weathers!  CDHE has funded his work with Pueblo School District 70 for another year at $206,320. Patrick McGuire will be collaborating with him on this grant, entitled "Uncovering and Addressing Student Misconceptions: Improving Elementary Teachers Formative Assessment Capacity and Mathematics Pedagogical Content Knowledge."

From the proposal introduction:  "This project, which is a partnership with mathematics content, mathematics instruction, and formative assessment experts from the University of Colorado and the Colorado School of the Mines, offers a valuable opportunity for elementary teachers in Pueblo to develop the capacity to improve their mathematics pedagogical content knowledge and to learn how to create valid formative assessments that incorporate known student misconceptions and apply the data from these to improving student learning. This project builds upon a previously funded project to address similar needs for secondary math and science teachers, and will work to improve teacher formative assessment capacity and related foundational mathematics pedagogical content knowledge for elementary teachers by using the best professional development tools, instructional strategies, and research around mathematics instruction currently available.?
