RE: Research Council as a special committee to Faculty Assembly
This is to inform you that the Research Council is now a special committee of the Faculty Assembly. As a special committee, the Research Council Representative will attend the Faculty Assembly meeting each month and will make a formal report to the Faculty Assembly once a semester on its activities. The Research Council elects their own chairperson and this individual will be the Research Council Representative to the Faculty Assembly. The activities of the Research Council will not be determined by Faculty Assembly and the members of the Research Council are to be appointed by the Senior Faculty Associate for Research (or the Administrative Officer for Research). However, the Faculty Assembly may ask the Research Council for input on items pertaining to research activities and policies that are the business of Faculty Assembly. The Research Council representative will not have voting rights at Faculty Assembly meetings, as only standing committees have voting rights.
The goal of making the Research Council a special committee of the Faculty Assembly is to support the campus research initiative and to increase communication between different faculty groups.
The Research Council will be a special committee of the Faculty Assembly for three academic years (2004/2005 through 2006/2007). During the Spring 2007 semester, the chair of the Research Council, president of Faculty Assembly, VCAA, and administrator in charge of campus research activities (currently the Senior Faculty Associate for Research) will meet to discuss if the Research Council should remain a special committee, end its formal interactions with Faculty Assembly, or take actions to become a standing committee of Faculty Assembly.
The signatures of the Faculty Assembly President and the Faculty Associate for Research below indicate that both parties are in agreement with making the Research Council a special committee of the Faculty Assembly and each party understands the roles and responsibilities of such an action. Any recommendations regarding policy that come from the Research Council will be handled in a manner consistent with the Campus Policy on Policies.
