WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE "YES" FOR MORE AND BETTER TECHNOLOGY ON CAMPUS
·
uccs has one of the smallest
technology fee for state-funded universities in Colorado. For
example, CU Boulder charges $60 per
semester, UNC charges $4.50 per credit hour, and Ft Lewis College
charges $50 per
semester. In 1997, the national average for student technology fees at public 4-year
universities for full
time students was $143 per year. (It is only $20 at UCCS!)
The fee is for all students. The purpose of the fee is to purchase new equipment and software that is accessible to all students, to maintain and upgrade equipment used in all current and future learning (Excel) centers, and to develop a broad set of library informational communications offerings accessible to all students
The funds are used with significant student input. The Student Technology Fee Committee, whose membership breakdown is 70% students and 30% faculty, disburses the funds generated by the fee.
Computer replacements and more dial-in modems. The new computers that were installed in Columbine in fall 2000 as well as the expanded modem pool (from 60 lines to 120 lines) were made possible by the current Student Technology fee.
WHAT CAN A FEE
CHANGE DO?The Student Technology Fee Committee determines which projects get funded but some possible projects include:
- e.g., super-bright computer projectors. Regular replacement of computers in labs and learning centers.
Regular update of software so that students are using the most up-to-date applications.
Online tutoring services such as in mathematics, English, chemistry...
Web-based email.
Reduced prices for student licenses of productivity software.
A campus-wide web "portal". Customizable student calendars, course scheduling, grade books, etc.
More course material online.
More electronic library resources such as searchable databases..
More computer labs.
Longer available hours for computer labs.
Electronic support for student activities such as Student Government, Athletics, and the Scribe.
Up-to-date technology in the classrooms
Wireless access to the network from the library and other points on campus.
Help desk support for after-hours in the Housing Village.
THE STUDENT TECHNOLOGY FUNDING PLAN
Switch from a flat fee to a per credit hour fee.
For Fall 2001, the student technology fee would be $3 per credit hour. A typical full-time undergraduate would pay only an additional $26 above the current fee.
The fee would increase by an additional $1.00 per credit hour in Fall
2002 and another $1.00 in Fall 2003. Regular meetings of the Student Technology Fee Committee will be held for maximal use of funds.
Want to know more? Visit the Student Technology Fee Website:
http://www.uccs.edu/~stf or email a question to: stf@uccs.edu
The Ballot will read:
"Do you favor supporting the expansion and maintenance of technology on campus
through an increase of the current Student Learning Technology Fee? In the past, the
revenues from this fee have made it possible for the campus to replace obsolete computers
in Columbine, double the number of dial-in modem lines, and upgrade equipment in the Excel
centers. Increased revenues will provide an opportunity to introduce new
technologies and services to all students such as web-based email so you can access your
university email from anywhere, online mathematics and science tutoring, more web-based
student services such as calendars and customized web pages, and more technologies so that
classes will be available online. The Student Technology Fee committee, whose
membership breakdown is 70% students and 30% faculty, determines which projects are
actually funded. The increased student fee will be phased in over three years to
align the technological improvements over time with students who will benefit. For
academic year 2001-2002, the Student Technology Fee will be $3.00 per credit hour, in
academic year 2002-2003, the fee will be $4.00 per credit hour, and in 2003-2004, the fee
will be $5.00 per credit hour. Following academic year 2003-2004, the Student
Learning Technology Fee can be increased by as much as, but no more than, ten percent per
year, in the future without a student vote, if deemed appropriate by the Student
Technology Fee committee."
