REPORT OF THE MINORITY AFFAIRS COMMITTEE 04/00
=======================================
The Faculty Minority Affairs Committee has met three times since my last report--on March 4, March 17 (with the Chancellor), and on April 7. Unfortunately, I have fallen behind on the minutes. I will provide a brief update and forward minutes when they are complete.
We discussed five priority issues with Chancellor Shade, VC Pierce, and VC Shockley:
1. A Campus Diversity Report should be created to take the place of the yearly statement supporting affirmative action. We recommended that the diversity report incorporate the diversity principles laid out by the American Council on Education and also document the progress that our campus is making toward racial and ethnic diversity.
2. We shared our excitement that the AVCAMA position is being filled and expressed the need for adequate support for the Office for Multicultural Affairs.
3. We expressed our support for continuing to incorporate diversity into the core of the university curriculum.
4. We argued that diversity programs (including AVCAMA, OMA, and Ethnic Studies) need to be provided locations on campus that are visible and readily accessible to students, faculty, and administration.
5. We asked that a minority faculty recruitment and retention plan for the university be created in the next year including measurable goals and committed resources.
The final Faculty MAC meeting of the year will be in conjunction with the systemwide Faculty of Color committee which is visiting our campus on May 5 from 12-2.
I will be at a meeting in Denver this Friday so I will miss the Rep Assembly meeting.
