1. Diversity Week-Lynda Dickson reviewed the plans for diversity week. She encouraged
committee members to attend as many of the activities as possible, particularly the
presentation by Renee Redwood and the Faces of America performance.
2. Chairing the committee-Kee plans to step down as chair of the committee after this
semester. No one has yet volunteered to take over. Andrea indicated that she may be
willing to co-chair the committee if someone
will share the responsibilities. The committee discussed others that might be invited to
participate during the coming year, including Gail Coulter, Ethylyn Williams, Christina
Martinez, Nicole Bird, Radha Pyati, Christina Jimenez, Adrainna Karch, Al Ramirez, Randy
Cubero, Ed Pipes, Barb Swaby, and Jay Coakley. They will be contacted for the first
meeting next year.
3. Faculty MAC Meeting with the Chancellor-Our committee met with the Chancellor on March
17. We discussed five issues.
The Chancellor was receptive to the idea of a yearly campus diversity
statement and to meeting with Faculty MAC at least annually. Some Faculty MAC
members felt this should be increased to a meeting once
each semester.
The Chancellor agreed to develop in the next year a minority faculty
recruitment and retention plan for the campus with specific, measureable goals. Commitment
to diversity core curriculum-support.
The Chancellor supports including diversity in the the core of the
university curriculum.
We argued that adequate support be provided for the AVCAMA position and
for the Office of Multicultural Affairs.
We presented our view the diversity programs on campus, including
Ethnic Studies, AVCAMA, and OMA should be located so that they have high visibility and
accessibility to students, faculty, and administration. Faculty MAC sees this as a
priority as short-term and long-term decisions are make about allocating space on campus.
The Chancellor and senior
administrators supported these goals within the physical planning constraints that exist.
4. Meeting with System-wide Faculty of Color Committee-The CU System Faculty of Color will
meet on our campus on May 5. They have provided a list of questions regarding diversity to
the Chancellor. Other issues that we may raise with this committee are: the prospects for
allocating TLE funds for diversity at the system level, rctention and pay equity for
minority faculty, and promoting greater social and scholarly interchangeamong the
campuses.
5. Non-discrimination clause-The Faculty MAC unanimously supported addingsexual
orientation to the anti-discrimination statements at the campus and system level. Kee will
send communicating this to President Buechner.
6. Candidate for AVCAMA-Dr. Bernice Guilliome, the top candidate for the AVCAMA position,
is making a second visit to campus. We have a time reserved to meet with her on Tuesday,
April 11, from 3:30-4 in Lib. 125.
7. Office for Multicultural Affairs-Marguerite announced that minority student
organizations will be recognized at an awards banquet on Friday, April 28 at the
Doubletree Hotel. The keynote speaker will be Gene Sanchez.
8. Ethnic Minority Studies- Andrea announced that Ethnic Studies minors that graduate this
Spring will receive "diversity" cords. She is also planning placing a display
case for Ethnic Studies in Columbine Hall.
9. The final committee meeting for the year will be the visit of the CU Faculty of Color
meeting on May 5 from 12-2 in Breckinridge 5104.
