Faculty Assembly President’s Report

December 10, 2004

Jenenne P. Nelson

As the semester draws to a close, I realize that the Faculty Assembly (FA) has had a busy past few months. The agenda this month is a reflection of what has been happening in our committees. Hopefully, the rest during the holidays will help revitalize faculty since I am predicting that spring semester will be just as busy.

One item that is on the agenda early in 2005 for the Faculty Council  is President Betsy Hoffman’s five year review. Currently, the Faculty Council Executive Committee is working to develop a common instrument to evaluate the President that will be electronically implemented through a central location.  Each Faculty Assemblies’ will then determine if the entire faculty will be surveyed or just part of the faculty. For instance, Boulder FA wants to survey its entire faculty while the Health Sciences campus wants to assess their FA Representatives only. After discussing this with the UCCS FA Executive Committee, we believe it is important that the entire UCCS faculty be surveyed. You will definitely hear more about this in the early in 2005 as the process evolves.

From a system perspective, President Hoffman continues to discuss the development of the CU performance contract with CCHE.  The performance contract became part of CU’s future with the award of enterprise status. After two meetings between the President’s team and CCHE, there is still no performance contract. Furthermore, no other higher education institution in Colorado has one either. I will keep you posted on this as it develops.

On our campus, there is a new policy on “Review of Positions for Exemption from the State Personnel System” (no number yet) under review that is being routed to campus governance groups. This policy draws its authority from Senate Bill 007 passed in 2004 legislative session. This policy allows classified positions to be reclassified as a Professional Exempt position by the supervisor. While this policy may benefit some, others are concerned that the policy may erode promotion opportunities for classified staff. Please let me know if you have any concerns about the policy and I will express them in the review process.

In closing, I hope you and your family has a restful holiday season. Please be safe if you are traveling or just having fun! I look forward to serving with you in the New Year!
