Faculty Assembly

Motion passed by the CU-Colorado Springs faculty on May 4, 2000

BE IT MOVED

That the campus-wide core goals of general education for undergraduates at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs shall be: 

PREAMBLE: The overarching purpose of general education is to cultivate students' intellectual, personal and ethical development and thus equip them to be life-long learners, able to adapt to an ever-changing environment.

GOALS:

1) Students will be able to read, write, listen and speak in a manner that demonstrates critical, analytical and creative thought.

2) Students will achieve a depth of understanding in their majors and a breadth of experience in other fields.

3) Students will understand and apply the tools and methodologies used to obtain knowledge.

4) Students will be prepared to participate as responsible members of a pluralistic society - locally, nationally and globally.

And that each college of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs shall submit a proposal for using its requirements to achieve these goals and a plan for assessing student achievement no later than February 2, 2001;

And that each college shall work diligently to have said proposal and plan approved no later than March 17, 2001;

And that a campus approval process for college general education proposals shall be developed in a timely manner by the Educational Policy and University Standards Committee of the Faculty Assembly in consultation with the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs;

And that said process shall become operational only upon adoption by the Faculty Representative Assembly, but no later than January 31, 2001;

And that each college’s assessment plan shall be subject to approval by the Student Achievement Assessment Committee.

And that the goals and the overall campus general education program shall be reviewed by a committee of the Faculty Assembly within three
