Assessment at UCCS

Summary of Responsibilities

Individual Faculty will be aware of and consult in the formation of assessment plans in the academic units they participate in. They will also make themselves aware of the outcomes of assessment activities and actively participate in shaping unit responses to assessment outcomes.

Academic Units will involve faculty in formulating and implementing assessment plans that produce useful outcomes for program improvement, and will clearly designate a primary contact for assessment matters. Academic units will make timely, complete and useful progress reports to SAAC on the progress they have achieved on assessment. Reports on assessment progress will include justifiable educational goals that lead to measurable objectives, specific measures of success in achieving those objectives (with at least two measures relevant to each goal), summarized and interpreted results on each measure, and a description of the changes made to educational programs in response to these results.

Students will participate in the assessment program at various points in their career at CU-Colorado Springs. Students will have the opportunity to reflect upon their academic work and express their thoughts, in oral and written forms, about the levels of success they think they have experienced in achieving the learning outcomes identified and expected by faculty.

The Student Achievement Assessment Committee will provide a structure for reporting on assessment activities, will evaluate the regular reports, and provide feedback to academic units on the efficacy of assessment and recommendations for improvement. The committee will serve as a primary contact point with regard to campus-level assessment of student achievement and data collection. The committee will provide information, advice, and recommendations to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs on matters of assessment.

Academic Deans will insure that units within their colleges are discharging all responsibilities with regard to assessment, and will lead their faculties in recognizing the value of program improvement to the campus.

The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs will work with SAAC to identify and respond to campus needs with regard to assessment. Based on SAAC recommendations, the VCAA will work with deans to insure that academic units are engaged in effective assessment activities that lead to program improvements. The VCAA will provide leadership to deans, academic unit leaders, and faculty in general in recognizing the value of program improvement, and advocate for resources and policies at the campus level that support effective assessment and program improvement.
