On May 4, 2000 the faculty of UCCS passed the following preamble and core goals for general education:
PREAMBLE: The overarching purpose of general education is to cultivate students' intellectual, personal and ethical development and thus equip them to be life-long learners, able to adapt to an ever-changing environment.

At several points during students' undergraduate experience they may be asked to participate in assessment activities. The following is an overview of what students could expect:
First-Year:
- Entering First-Year Student Survey
- National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE): a random sample is selected for this survey
Sophomore/Junior Years:
- ETS Measure of Academic Proficiency and Progress (MAPP): a test of general education, formerly the Academic Profile
Senior Year:
- Graduating Seniors Survey
- ETS Measure of Academic Proficiency and Progress (MAPP)
- National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE): a random sample is selected for this survey
